Fishing and kayaking in Finnish Lapland

Come and enjoy an active holiday on the Muonio River! Here you can fish right next to your accommodation on the Muonio River and its tributary, the Äkäsjoki River. The Muonio River is a renowned salmon river, where you can also catch grayling, pike, perch, and ide. The nearby Äkäsjoki River is mainly a grayling fishing destination and is also an important sea trout spawning river. However, sea trout fishing is completely prohibited, which is why fishing on the Äkäsjoki River is done with barbless hooks.

The trip also includes guided canoeing on the Muonionjoki River. We use stable sit-on-top kayaks, which are also ideal for fishing. We will go on a couple of canoeing trips, during which those who wish to can also fish on their own. In addition, there will be time for independent fishing, and fishing kayaks will also be available outside of the excursions (no longer on July 11, 2026).

This travel package is available in two lengths: 3 nights from July 6 to 9, 2026, and 2 nights from July 9 to 11, 2026.

At the beginning of July 2026, we will head to Kolari and Muonionjoki in Finnish Lapland, where we will go kayaking and fishing in Finland’s best salmon river. Our base will be Rantalan Majat, whose accommodation is located just a stone’s throw away from the salmon fishing spots on the Muonionjoki River. The Äkäsjoki River is also within walking distance.

In addition to fishing, we will go on kayaking trips in sit-on-top kayaks during the trip. Thanks to their stability, the kayaks are also well suited for fishing, and even inexperienced paddlers can safely participate in the trips. The kayaks are equipped with reclining seats and rod holders. A paddling instructor will guide you through the basics of paddling, and we will take one short introductory paddling trip and one longer day trip. The kayaking routes pass through good fishing spots, so independent fishing is recommended, but you can also just enjoy kayaking if you wish. There are no strong rapids along the route, although the current in some parts of the route will carry the kayaks along nicely.

Outside of the tour times, the kayaks are freely available for participants to use (no longer on July 11), and it is also possible to book a motorized salmon fishing boat from Rantalan Majoilta, either alone or in a group with other interested participants.

We are not responsible for any future fishing restrictions in the area, but we will adapt our fishing practices accordingly. In 2025, the closed season on the river was from Sunday at 7:00 p.m. to Monday at 7:00 p.m. (probably the same in 2026). During this period, all fishing on the Muonio River is prohibited. Those wishing to fish on the Muonio River will therefore have to wait until 7:00 p.m. on the first evening. Before that, it is possible to fish on the Äkäsjoki River. Fishing permits are not included in the price of the trip and are the responsibility of each individual. Permits can be purchased online, and salmon permits can also be purchased from our accommodation.

This travel package is available in two lengths: 3 nights from July 6 to 9, 2026, and 2 nights from July 9 to 11, 2026. The package does not include transportation, but participants will arrive at Rantala Majat by their own means. Transportation to the canoeing trips is included in the price.

Our accommodation, Rantalan Majat, is located a short drive from the services of Kolari. Accommodation is in rooms with a kitchen, toilet, shower, and sleeping space for two. Extra beds can be added for 1-2 additional people. Bed linen and final cleaning are included in the price.

The price of the trip includes accommodation, guided canoeing trips, access to a sauna, and free use of kayaks. Additional services available at extra cost include a motorized rowing boat, a local fishing guide (rower), and transportation from Kittilä Airport.
