SELECTIVE FISHING IN RESPONSIBLE GUIDING

– Our target species in eastern Finland are pike, perch, pike perch whitefish, burbot and cyprinids.

– We do not fish for endangered or threatened species.  In Finland, south of 64º00´N, we do not fish for trout, salmon, arctic char and grayling. We do not target eel anywhere in Finland.

– In waters where there is a likelihood of catching endangered fish as by-catch, we use barbless hooks (except for jigs) and knotless hand nets. We use a maximum of three hook tips on our lures. These measures are intended to speed up the release of endangered fish as by-catch and to reduce damage to the fish that are released.

– We can organise fishing trips for salmonids and trips to places where they are caught sustainably, such as certain places in Finnish Lapland and abroad.

– We respecting minimum sizes

– On our guided trips, we follow the following upper limits on average:

o perch 35 cm

o pike 80 cm

o pike 60 cm

o the upper dimensions may vary from one water body to another by +/- 5 cm.

– We follow the maximum sizes because:

o larger fish are generally subject to greater fishing pressure

o large fish often have a faster growth rate and a large fish genome and are therefore important mother fish

o larger fish produce more eggs and often produce stronger offspring

o large fish are not as good for food as intermediate fish and in many waters they are also unfit for human consumption due to high levels of poison.

– We do not catch more fish than we can eat fresh at any one time. We do not freeze fish to storage and we do not sell our catch.

USE OF FISH IN CATERING SERVICES

– We buy locally caught fish, mainly from the North Karelia region. When availability is low, we may also buy fish caught elsewhere in Finland.

– We only buy fish from official commercial fishermen who have the appropriate permits to operate in the trade.

– We know our main fish suppliers and know that they operate in accordance with our principles of responsible fishing.

– We prefer fishermen who use selective fishing methods, such as fishing by fyketraps

  • In fyketrap fishing, fish do not suffer (as in gillnetting), fyke fishing allows the release of undersized fish, large individuals and protected fish.
    • Fyketrap fishing also takes into account the Saimaa ringed seal, with the widespread use of so-called seal-proof fykes.

– We also buy fish caught by gillnets, especially in winter, when they are caught in areas where the gear does not pose a significant risk to  migratory fish or seals.

– We also take care of other permits, such as the right to use rest areas for our business.
